Floored is a physical installation that traces forms of presence that emerge at the peripheries of the dance floor. To trace in this context is to seek a way to practice and find a queer self in between the BPM’s. The dance floor offers temporary refuge from spaces where queerness cannot fully exist. Yet, this mode of being cannot be accessed anytime and anywhere. Floored asks what happens in the spaces between these moments.
The installation explores queer modes of scoping space, where the silent noise of boots on the floor act as an anchor within the nooks and crannies of liminality. Liminality unfolds at Pluto in the corner of a long alley, which begins at the bar and ends at the dance floor.
The work emphasises the ideal floor on which to be heard and seen, away from the safety of darkness and an overworked fog machine. The installation is further shaped by conversations with a queer Pluto regular, whose reflections on movement, visibility, and belonging informed its spatial approach. As a material trace of these conversations, the installation incorporates a sculptural heel attachment that amplifies the “click” sound of boots against the floor.
